Cable

SetTopBox - Television User-interface and Design

A key challenge for Cable Operators world-wide is knowing when the time is right to make capital investments replacing existing STB platforms and when to invest to extend existing platforms.

This is made increasingly more complex in a market where the expectation for what a video experience should be is driven by rich experiences from Apple, with I-Tunes, the BBC with I-Player and a host of other OTT challengers. The fundamental question remains; do we try to compete on features with IP-only solutions that require wholesale infrastructural changes or do we take advantage of our incumbency in the home and evolve our current platform... or both.

A major north American cable operator has 6 Million set-top-boxes in customers' homes whose user-interface and interactivity capabilities is 5 years behind the market. Further the STB manufacturer has told the customer that there is little that can be accomplished to improve the overall user-experience.

In this case Vibrant New Media worked closely with both the customer and the STB manufacturer to develop an entirely new navigation system (Electronic programming guide and VOD navigation) for the existing box, essentially squeezing every ounce of performance out of the current platform.

The Challenge:

Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) provided poor user experience and lack of modern features.

The Solution:

VNM worked with an ill-equipped legacy platform operating system to develop an entirely new User Experience, including the addition of Boolean search, recommendation real estate, and a host of UX improvements.

The Benefit:

VNM work allowed their customer to get an additional 3-5 years of their existing set-top box installed base; equally $10's of millions in savings.

Entertainment

TV Everywhere Service creation

One of the most interesting ripple effects of digital transformation is the reinvention of traditional analog businesses into new, highly motivated digital ones.

In particular we have seen a multitude of global postproduction and distribution companies realizing that Darwin was talking about Business as well as Nature and they have moved quickly to evolve. In one case VNM has worked with a Global entertainment services company to design a platform to be used by their customers to sell/offer TV content to their subscribers on an array of devices; including IPADs and iPhone, android and various set top boxes.

Where traditionally, this provider would offer color separation, DVD authoring, and digital file fulfillment; they now have moved well up the stack to offer end-to-end distribution, a fully-realized Video Commerce System. Vibrant worked with the client to evolve a best-of-breed architectural approach based on industry best practices, and feedback from multiple internal groups as well as customers. Vibrant first refined this approach in an actionable engineering requirements document, then built/tested/delivered the new system within the allotted timeframe set by the customer.

The Challenge:

Build a platform to allow Entertainment and Cable businesses to market and sell their content online to their best customers, and do so with reusable development elements.

The Solution:

VNM worked with our customer to design and develop an end to end commerce system that would allow other businesses to compete with the likes of Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon-like services.

The Benefit:

No longer was there the need to build and deploy bespoke video services with repeated back end infrastructure. The templatized approach saved our customer millions in development and maintenance costs.

The Details:

4 months, ongoing; 1 Architect/Program Manager, 1 designers, and 3 developers.

North American Cable Operator

Multi-screen OTT service

Traditional Cable Television providers are fighting wars on multiple fronts these days.

Not only are they under pressure from their traditional telecom and satellite providers but more and more they are seeing customer erosion to over the top (OTT) providers like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. These competitors are able to offer similar Video on Demand programming but without all the costs of having to build and maintain a digital video network.

To combat this assault in their footprint Cable companies are launching TV Everywhere services that make video consumption and purchasing available from any device, anywhere in the world.

Vibrant New Media has worked in conjunction with Cisco Systems to help implement a live and on-demand TV Everywhere platform for a major N. American cable company. In doing so we developed a base web-portal, IOS and Android applications that can be utilized by future customers. In this case we realized that as part of this deployment Vibrant was called on to integrate with the carriers billing and entitlement system.
